Baltimore Chamber Orchestra conducting workshop with MARKAND THAKAR, January 9-12, 2010

Up to 10 participants will conduct the internationally acclaimed Baltimore Chamber Orchestra in works by Barber, Mozart and Brahms under the supervision of BCO music director Markand Thakar, co-director of Graduate Conducting (with Gustav Meier) at the Peabody Conservatory.

One participant will be chosen to conduct Barber’s Adagio for Strings on the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra’s February 14, 2010 concert.

WORKSHOP FOCUS
The workshop will focus on the conductor’s role in achieving the most magical musical experience, with special attention to consummate technical control. Each participant will have over 70 minutes total podium time, with all sessions recorded. In addition to orchestra and quintet/piano sessions, the workshop will include daily video review and technique development sessions. Additionally, participants are invited to daily breakfast conversations with Maestro Thakar, covering topics from the practical to the profound.

MARKAND THAKAR is the Charles A. and Carolyn M. Russell Music Director of the Duluth Superior Symphony, music director of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and principal conductor of the Duluth Festival Opera. A student of the legendary Sergiu Celibidache and former assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic, Thakar is the author of Counterpoint: Fundamentals of Music Making (Yale University Press, 1990) and the forthcoming In Pursuit of Beauty: Looking for the “Harp” Quartet (University of Rochester Press, 2010). For the past 13 seasons he has been co-director (with Gustav Meier) of Graduate Conducting at the Peabody Conservatory.

Students of Maestros Meier and Thakar at Peabody have won significant conducting positions across North America, including music directorships with the Winnipeg, Eugene, Lubbock, Muncie, Williamsport, Young Musician’s Foundation, Mid-Atlantic, Sioux City, Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Washington-Idaho, and Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestras; staff conducting positions with the orchestras of Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle, Richmond, Winnipeg, Kansas City, Canton, and El Paso; as well as numerous collegiate positions.

In its 27th season, BALTIMORE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA is Maryland’s premiere small orchestra. Recently lauded by the New York Times for its “warmth and substance,” in 2009 the BCO released two CD’s on the Naxos label, and will be performing a series of five concerts in China. Baltimore Chamber Orchestra is comprised of Baltimore Symphony Orchestra musicians and top area professionals. BCO concerts are reviewed by the Baltimore Sun’s Tim Smith.
