The Madison Public Library will present “Conducting Unplugged: How to Get 100 People You Don’t Know To Do What You Want Them To” at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17th in the Chase Room. Paul Hostetter, Colonial Symphony Music Director and Conductor will be the speaker.
Maestro Hostetter will demonstrate how he gets a diverse group of musicians to work together with a singular vision.
1) Gestural language – more specific than you think.
2) Preparation, and how to truly digest the thoughts of another.
3) The psychology of working with people on disparate instruments requiring different techniques – including how the players’ personalities sometimes match the instruments they play.
Using anecdotes, recordings, and audience participation, he unlocks the mysteries of the conductor’s art — which just may have implications for everyday life.
In addition to being the Music Director for the Colonial Symphony, Hostetter is the Director of Orchestral Studies at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University, and Conductor/Music Advisor for the acclaimed contemporary ensemble Sequitur. He has appeared as a guest conductor with the New York City Opera, Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh, Genesis Opera, Peak Performances, New Jersey Symphony, Syracuse Symphony, Delaware Symphony, San Franscisco Contemporary Music Players, Philharmonia Virtuosi, American Composers Orchestra, and many others. His recordings have garnered a Grammy Award and Downbeat Critics Award, and he has presented masterclasses at the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Michigan.
