| California Symphony founder and conductor Barry Jekowksy is out
Posted: 09/22/2010 04:26:16 PM PDT For the first time in 24 years, when the California Symphony opens its season in the Lesher Center for the Arts on Oct. 3, founder and music director Barry Jekowsky will not be at the podium. California Symphony board president Mike Soza confirmed this afternoon that the board of directors decided Tuesday evening to terminate the conductor. “Barry and the Symphony are going their separate ways,” Soza said. The decision, apparently, was a financial one, but Soza would not comment on whether the full board was in agreement. “It was a board decision,” he said. Board member Helen Allen, a Concord City Council member, was not at the meeting and definitely not in agreement. “He has been so cooperative and so professional and so good,” she said. “I just don’t understand why he was let go.” |
