SANTA ROSA SYMPHONY (SRS), CALIFORNIA

Position:  Conductor for the Discovery (youth) Orchestra (DO).  The DO is an intermediate to advanced level, full orchestra for upper elementary, middle and high school students up to 18 years of age.  The DO provides a rich and rewarding educational experience for musicians who wish to play in a full orchestra while increasing their knowledge of music and performing with peers having similar interests and abilities.  The DO is one of five youth ensembles which are part of the SRS’s Training Young Musicians Program.  The DO follow the Preparatory Orchestra in the program.  Responsibilities:  Lead/teach the ensemble in weekly Saturday rehearsals, 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. between September, 2011, and May, 2012.  The season length varies each year averaging 27 rehearsals and four performances, which may be presented in different local venues.  Rehearsals provide members with training in all aspects of musical knowledge, orchestral and chamber ensemble techniques, as well as preparation for performances.  The DO Conductor is a member of the Education Department team and plays a part in developing strategies to inspire/nurture/cultivate young musicians through education programs in Sonoma County.  Qualifications:  The successful candidate will have experience both as an outstanding professional musician and teacher who has a proven ability to work with young musicians.  Experience leading and orchestra, a demonstrated understanding of the basic of all orchestral instruments, and knowledge of age-appropriate youth orchestra repertoire is required.  Outstanding coordination, communication and organizational skills are necessary.  Experience in cultivating/maintaining healthy music education programs is preferred. Also important is the candidate’s ability to attract and retain young musicians in the programs.
