Position Description:
The Department of Music at the University of Chicago seeks an entry-level orchestral conductor of both skill and promise to fill the part-time Lecturer position as Director of the University Chamber Orchestra. Primary responsibilities include planning and conducting weekly rehearsals and quarterly performances for an ensemble of approximately 25-30 student and community musicians that performs Baroque, early Classical, and twentieth-century chamber orchestra literature in its quarterly concerts, and that serves as the pit orchestra in an annual Gilbert & Sullivan opera production. The Chamber Orchestra Director functions within a large extra-curricular performance program at the University of Chicago, which involves over 650 talented young musicians (most of whom are not music majors) in fifteen different performance ensembles. The Director works closely with the Director of Performance Programs and other members of the performance faculty and staff in planning repertoire and soloists, generating publicity, and developing special projects for the Chamber Orchestra, and in enhancing the overall profile of the performance program on campus. The Chamber Orchestra director also serves as the overall Music Director for the annual Gilbert & Sullivan production, which is produced in collaboration with a local community theatre organization. The position is particularly appropriate for a young conductor seeking substantial podium and music director experience within an educational environment. One-year appointment with possible renewal.
