The participants have been chosen among the 125 aplicants. A video jury judged the preliminary qualifying round and chose 20 competitors and three reserve contestants. The video jury consisted of Academician Jorma Panula, conductors Atso Almila (Finland) and Jin Wang (Austria) and docent Jari Sinkkonen (Finland).

The Jorma Panula Conducting Competition is held every three years and is one of the most esteemed competitions in its field in Europe. The Academician Jorma Panula himself has acted as the competition’s Artistic Director and Chairman of the Jury right from the start. The Viljo and Maire Vuorio Foundation is in charge of organising the competition, in cooperation with the City of Vaasa.

The first Jorma Panula Conducting Competition was held in 1999. Previous winners of the competition include Olari Elts, Eva Ollikainen, Vytautas Lukocius and Yordan Kamdzhalov.

The main prizes in the competition are: 1st Prize EUR 11,000, 2nd Prize EUR 8,000 and 3rd Prize EUR 6,000. Registration for the competition takes place online athttp://www.panulacompetition.fi.

This year the members of the Jury include Academician Jorma Panula (Chairman, Finland), Conductor Olari Elts (Estonia), Conductor Alun Francis (Germany), General Director Andrew Bennett (Portugal), Conductor Jin Wang (Austria) and, representing musicians, Maano Männi (Vaasa City Orchestra) and Juha Markkanen (Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä).

The competition orchestras are the Vaasa City Orchestra and Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä, both leading professional orchestras in their regions. The violin soloists are Kreeta-Julia Heikkilä in the Semi-finals and Alina Pogostkina in the Finals.
The venue for the competition is one of the most beautiful concert halls in Finland, the magnificent assembly room of the Vaasa City Hall, built in the 19th century, which has excellent acoustics. The Finals concert will be held on Friday 16th November.
