Apprentice Conductor Program
Position Announcement
The Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic seeks an Apprentice Conductor to act as a cover conductor for rehearsals and concerts, conduct occasional concerts or partial concerts and perform non-conducting duties as assigned. The position begins when it is filled during the 2012-2013 Season. Candidates must have meaningful orchestral conducting experience in an academic or professional setting, a broad knowledge of orchestral repertoire and concert programming, be fluent and articulate in English and be available and present for both NEPP rehearsals and concerts. Conducting opportunities will depend on the experience of the candidate chosen.
This position is paid an honorarium per-concert week plus per diem. It is envisioned as a way for aspiring conductors to gain valuable experience through a wide variety of duties with a professional orchestra and staff and through the mentorship of the Music Director.
About the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic
Founded in 1972, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic is a fully professional orchestra and the cornerstone cultural organization in the Northeastern Pennsylvania region. The annual operating budget is approximately 1.5 million. The majority of the free-lance musicians who play with the Philharmonic come from the New York City or Philadelphia metropolitan areas. In 2012-13, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic performs 4 classical programs, 4 pops programs, holiday, youth, family, parks concerts and numerous chamber music concerts. The Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic’s Music Director is Lawrence Loh, who was appointed in Fall of 2004. Mr. Loh is also Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
The Philharmonic is based in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania and regularly performs in both communities. The organization is comprised of a 26 member governing Board of Directors, four full-time and three part-time employees. The Philharmonic staff is led by Co-Adminstrators Patricia Arvonio and Steve Parulski.

Please send a cover letter, resume, references, biography and links to online conducting videos (no DVDs) as soon as possible, but no later than August 31, 2012 to nepaphilconductor@gmail.com Videos should be captured from the orchestra’s perspective and should include diverse styles of repertoire. Final Round Live Auditions with the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic may take place on September 13, 2012 from 6-8pm. Repertoire will be Brahms Academic Festival Overture and Copland Appalachian Spring (full orchestra version).
