Meet Hilton Head orchestra’s guest conductors

The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra recently announced five guest conductors for the 2011-12 season titled “Be Our Guest.” The orchestra also has announced John Morris Russell will serve as principal guest conductor for the season. Russell also will conduct the final round of the 2012 Hilton Head International Piano Competition and the Symphony Under the Stars concerts.

Five additional guest conductors will take the baton for one of the Masterworks or Light Classics concerts. The guest conductors are Teddy Abrams, Daniel Meyer, Sean Newhouse, Arthur Post and Bohuslav Rattay. Each is an applicant in the orchestra’s search for a new music director.

TEDDY ABRAMS

Abrams performs as a conductor, clarinetist and pianist in addition to composing and teaching. The 2010-11 season marks his third season as Conducting Fellow of the New World Symphony. He was the youngest conducting student ever accepted at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Aspen Music Festival.

DANIEL MEYER

Meyer has won acclaim for his illuminating programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect as music director of the Asheville (N.C.) Symphony and Erie (Pa.) Philharmonic. He has helped to reinvigorate the orchestras in both communities with innovative programs.

SEAN NEWHOUSE

Newhouse made an acclaimed last-minute debut with the Boston Symphony in February 2011, conducting Mahler’s “Ninth Symphony” on two hours’ notice in place of James Levine. He is the first American-born conductor in 15 years to be appointed assistant conductor to the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was music director of the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra in Los Angeles and spent two seasons as associate conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

ARTHUR POST

Post is celebrating his inaugural season as music director of Canada’s Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. He is also continuing for a ninth season as music director of the San Juan Symphony. His current work reflects his training in Germany and his assistantships with conductors Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta and Michael Tilson Thomas.

BOHUSLAV RATTAY

Czech conductor Rattay is now in his fifth season as the Artistic Director of the Muncie (Ind.) Symphony Orchestra and beginning his first as music director of the Lake Charles (La.) Symphony. He has gained a reputation for combining virtuosic musicianship with a determination to bring great music into the lives of all people.
