It’s the news fans of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic had feared.
About a week before music director Lawrence Leighton Smith was to take the podium for his farewell, the philharmonic announced he won’t lead the orchestra in his final concert.
“On Monday, I got a call from Leslie Smith, Larry’s wife,” said Nathan Newbrough, executive director of the philharmonic. “Larry has taken a serious turn for the worse with this illness.”
Newbrough expects that Smith will attend the $150-a-plate gala in his honor on Friday.
“But I think anything can happen,” he said.
