Job/Position Title: Director of Orchestras and Conductor of Idaho State Civic Symphony/Assistant Professor

Primary Purpose:

Direct the Idaho State Civic Symphony and act as Artistic Director; serve on Symphony Board of Directors. Teach courses in conducting, applied studio (strings), and other relevant duties. Maintain leadership role in outreach and recruitment. Forge strong community ties, especially with prospective donors.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Direct the Idaho State Civic Symphony, an orchestra comprised of university students, faculty and community members. Act as Artistic Director, arrange for guest artists, and other related duties. The Symphony is part of the ISU Music Department, maintains a full concert season, and is managed and supported by an external community Board of Directors.

2. Work closely with University colleagues, and forge strong community ties. Work closely and collegiality with the Symphony Board of Directors (serving as ex-officio on the Board).

3. Classroom and teaching assignments are contingent upon the candidate’s qualifications and departmental needs. Likelihood of applied studio teaching, and of administrative coordination within the applied studio and music department.

4. Participates in Departmental, College, and University service; assume a leadership role in recruitment and outreach activities.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Doctorate in orchestral conducting required. ABD with evidence of near-completion considered.

2. Evidence of experience in conducting college or community orchestra(s) required.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Preference given to candidate with applied background in, and ability to act as “artist-teacher”, of stringed instruments.

2. Evidence of successful college studio and/or classroom teaching preferred.

3. Preference given to candidate with abilities to teach varied academic courses, such as conducting, history/musicology, form & analysis, or other.
