The Position:
Tafelmusik seeks aMusicDirector ofinternational calibrewho specializesinperiod
performance anddirectswhileplaying: a first among equalsworking ina collaborative
environmentdedicatedto thehigheststandards ofmusical excellence.Reporting to the
BoardofDirectors andworking closelywiththeManagingDirector,theMusicDirector
willhave responsibility for artistic leadership,rehearsals, concertplanning, educationand
artisttraining,touring,recording, andliaisonwiththe staff,thepublic,donors andfunders
inpublicity andfundraising activities.
The ideal candidatewillbe anoriginal andinnovative thinkerwho canbringnewideasto all
aspects ofTafelmusik’s operations,while cherishing andbuilding onitspast achievements.
ThenewMusicDirectorwillbe a collaborative leader, giftedatprogramming,whowill
contribute to the artisticdevelopment of ourmusicians andaudiences.Aprogressive
approachtonon-traditionalprogramming andmediaplatformsinorderto engage
emerging audienceswouldbewelcomed, aswell as expertise inbalancing repertoire
planningwitheconomic realities.

to communicatewitheloquence andpassionthe visionandambitions ofTafelmusik
to allstakeholders, audiences andmedia.Weprefer a candidatewhowilltakeup
residence inToronto.
The Organization:
TafelmusikBaroqueOrchestra,foundedin1979byKennethSolway andSusanGraves andled
byMusicDirectorJeanneLamonsince 1981,is one oftheworld’sleadingperiodperformance
ensembles.The orchestraperforms over100concerts a year,withahome seasoninToronto
ofmore than50performances.Its annualbudgetis approximately $5million.
Tafelmusik tours extensively aroundtheworld,hasreleasedover80CDs, andhasreceived
nine JUNOAwards andaGrammyAwardnomination.TafelmusikMedia,Tafelmusik’s
multi-platformrecording label,waslaunchedinJanuary 2012.
The orchestra enjoys animportant collaborative relationshipwiththeTafelmusikChamber
Choir andits ongoingDirectorIvarsTaurins, andmaintains apartnershipwithToronto’s
OperaAtelier,whichspecializesin17th- and18th-century opera.Tafelmusik istheBaroque
Orchestra-in-Residence attheFaculty ofMusic,University ofToronto,where ithostsits
annualTafelmusikBaroque SummerInstitute.
Tafelmusikhasrecently touredwithinCanada andtoGermany,theUS,Australia,
NewZealand, andFrance, andlooksforwardtoupcoming toursto Japan,Korea,theUS,
France, andGermany.
InJanuary of 2013Tafelmusik announcedanambitious $3millionprojectto revitalize its
homeperformance venue,Toronto’sTrinity-St.Paul’sCentre.PhaseOne willseemajor
acoustic enhancements aswell assignificantphysicalimprovementsto thehallinthe areas
ofimprovement of audience comfort,sightlines, andthe aesthetics ofthe space,the
installationofpermanentstage, andimprovedaccessibility.PhaseTwowillfocus onthe
restorationandenhancement of otherspacesinTrinity-St.Paul’s,suchasthe lobby,
whilepreserving thehistoric characteristics ofthis125 year-oldheritagebuilding.
