Sydney Symphony Orchestra MASTERCLASS PROGRAM

Register now to participate in and/or observe masterclasses offered by members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra on 23 May.  Classes will be offered in: Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass), Woodwind (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon), Brass (French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone), Percussion and Conducting.

Conducting Masterclass

This workshop offers the opportunity for student conductors to intensively develop their conducting abilities. Each active conductor will have approximately 15 minutes of podium time, working on areas that will develop their communication, technique and understanding of the relationship between conductor and ensemble. All conductors and observers are encouraged to watch for the entire session as the teaching is interactive and will be directed to and for everyone. 

Issues that are likely to be covered include:

– stance

– holding the baton

– beating patterns

– body language and facial expression

– principals of baton technique (showing dynamics, texture, articulation, atmosphere)

– how to study a score

– knowledge of the score

– cause and effect between conductor and ensemble.
