Orchestra Conductor job opening

The Philharmonic Society of Arlington (PSA) consists of the Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra (APO) and also the Arlington-Belmont Chorale and Arlington-Belmont Chamber Chorus, which have their own conductor.

The PSA began as a community symphony orchestra in 1933. Over the past 45 years, the orchestra has had only two conductors. At the end of this season, our current conductor is stepping down after more than 30 years of service. We seek his replacement.

The APO is a non-audition community orchestra. New string players are always welcomed by the conductor and the membership. Other instrumentalists are welcomed as needed and at the discretion of the conductor and section leaders.

With the help of an assistant conductor, and in coordination with the Arlington-Belmont Chorale Conductor, the APO Conductor leads approximately thirty rehearsals and four concerts each year. As an ex officio member, the Conductor is expected to attend Board meetings.

Orchestra rehearsals are held from 7:30 PM to 9:45 PM Wednesday evenings at the First Parish Unitarian-Universalist Church, 630 Massachusetts Avenue, in Arlington. Three concerts — Sundays at 3 PM — are held at the First Parish location and two concerts are performed at Arlington Town Hall, 730 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington Center. At a family concert at Town Hall the conductor speaks appropriately for a very young audience. A Pops Concert by orchestra and chorale is held at Town Hall on a Friday evening in early June.

Candidates and constituents are encouraged to submit resumes and recommendations to the orchestra’s search committee by email toConductorSearch@PSArlington.org by May 17, 2013. Applications should include a musical C.V. as well as a DVD or online link (e.g. YouTube) to a performance led by the applicant. A video of a rehearsal is also helpful, if available.

The application process begins immediately. Submitted applications and materials will be considered over the next few months, and finalists will be auditioned by the orchestra in the fall. The new conductor will be engaged to conduct the remainder of the 2013–2014 season.

For more information about the position or the selection process, please write to ConductorSearch@PSArlington.org and one of the committee members will respond. If you prefer to phone, please call the Search Committee Chair, Gary Seligson, at 617–510–2293.
