Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras
A resident partner at
The Music Center at Strathmore
Position: MCYO Symphony Conductor
MCYO is seeking an energetic and vibrant conductor with outstanding teaching qualifications to direct the Symphony, a full symphony orchestra comprised of approximately 85 talented young musicians in grades 8-10.
The main focus of the Symphony orchestra is to develop skills and ensemble playing instilled in the younger orchestra level, Young Artists. The repertoire will include
original selections as well as arrangements from the standard orchestral literature and will be expected to challenge these musicians artistically and technically. Students should exit the Symphony well-prepared to advance to higher MCYO orchestra levels.
Qualifications should include either a music performance or a music education degree. The candidate should have good conducting skills and possess professional conducting experience. A background in rehearsing, teaching, and conducting large ensembles of student musicians in an orchestral setting is preferable. Experience teaching musicians in grades 6-12 is essential.
The conductors will work closely with the conductors of the other older and younger groups throughout the audition process and will collaborate with the entire conducting team throughout the concert season under the artistic leadership of the Artistic Director, Jonathan Carney (Concertmaster, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra). Conductor rotations during some seasons take place, broadening both student and conductor development and experience.
All MCYO ensembles rehearse Wednesday evenings during the school year at the Music Center at Strathmore. Three concerts per season are presented in the magnificent, world-class concert hall at Strathmore, with one additional community outreach concert presented at another venue at some point during the year. Concerts dates for next season are:
December 8, 2013; March 9, 2014 and June 1, 2014
If interested, please submit the following by June 20, 2013:
cover letter and resume with references
DVD or link showing self conducting a student group rehearsal or a performance (please ensure frontal view of conductor).
