Organist/Assistant Conductor Position Description
* 9-month position: September to early-May; No summer commitment
* Position may be attractive to advanced organ/sacred music student due to alignment with academic calendar
* Weekly (Thursday evening) rehearsal from 7:30-9:00 p.m.
* Accompany Adult Choirs; plays portion of service music at 8:30 and 9:50 services
* Includes guaranteed 1 Sunday off per month
* Occasionally conduct/assist with adult ensembles in rehearsal and worship
* Compensation and starting date (Sept 2013) are negotiable
A high level of flexibility may exist with this position. The successful candidate possesses strengths in both service playing and accompanying (organ and piano alike). Other opportunities may include (at the candidate’s discretion): worship planning, adult/youth choral and instrumental conducting, arranging and composition, weddings and funerals, visioning and departmental leadership. Salaried position.
About the PUMC Music and Fine Arts Department:
Plainfield United Methodist Church is an 1,100-member congregation on the west side of Indianapolis. With 3 weekly services, 3 being on Sunday, music and the arts are among the most important aspects of worship and congregational life. A comprehensive choral and instrumental music program for children through adults includes a children’s choir, two children’s bell ensembles, middle-school and high-school music ensembles, 2 adult bell choirs, choral scholars, contemporary praise team, and the mixed-voice adult choir. A 19-rank Schantz pipe organ and grand piano are staples of weekly worship during the 8:30 a.m. and 9:50 a.m. worship hours. The praise team leads the music for the Contemporary Service at 11:10. Recent repertoire includes: Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi Gloria, Rutter Gloria, and guests from the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra.
