General Information: The Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony was created by concerned
parents, music teachers, and musicians to keep a student orchestra program alive in Springfield,
Illinois. The Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony holds auditions for local and regional students
who aspire to be young musicians. The students, based on their skill level, are placed in one of
four orchestras: Junior Strings, Preparatory Strings, Concert Orchestra, or Symphony Orchestra.
In an effort to further our mission, we have developed a Starter Strings program for younger
grade level students, which allow string instrument teachers to introduce these young students to
a string instrument at various local and rural schools.
The mission statement of the SVYS is:
• To provide a quality, diverse, and challenging musical experience to its members
• To foster the members’ development through working with other youth of like talent and
active participation in performance of the finest symphonic masterworks and chamber
music of past and contemporary composers
• To stimulate interest in music and musical participation in young people of all levels of
talent and diverse backgrounds
Overview of Position:
The Music Director reports directly to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors and is
responsible for the fulfillment of the mission statement of the SVYS and SVCO. The Music
Director is responsible for the repertoire, programming, and artistic production of the
organization, and has the authority for the selection, development, recruiting and placement of
musicians. As the representative of SVYS and SVCO, the Music Director must build and sustain
the orchestra’s visibility and involvement in the community. The Music Director is expected to
work closely with the Executive Director, the Board, and staff to carry out these responsibilities.
The successful candidate will be required to lead SVYS rehearsals on weekday evenings and
SVCO rehearsals on Wednesday evenings throughout the season. The season runs from
September through May, with auditions starting in August. The successful candidate will have
experience working with amateur musicians and students of all levels, ranging from elementary
school students through adults. S/he will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
and will be able to speak and write passionately about the mission and vision of the SVYS and
SVCO. S/he will focus on the music education of all SVYS and SVCO members. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and time-management skills in order
to ensure meticulous attention to detail throughout the program and will be able to lead the
organization at all levels. S/he will be responsible for curriculum oversight, development, and
evaluation of teachers for the Starter Strings program. Knowledge and/or experience of string
techniques and methods are preferred.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about music education programs at all levels. S/he
will have a record of teaching experience in some capacity as well as success in building a
program. S/he will have a demonstrative ability as an effective supervisor and a team player who
has the highest ethical standards. S/he will be comfortable working with the Executive Director,
the board, staff, community leaders, and volunteers.

Provide a 10-15 minute DVD of recent conducting examples in concert settings. Rehearsal
settings are welcomed as well. DVDs may be submitted either in electronic format or by DVD to
SVYS Music Director Search Committee, 420 South Sixth Street, Springfield, IL 62701 by
Wednesday, July 10, 2013.
Applicants may be invited to travel to Springfield, IL for further consideration. Applicants will
be responsible for travel costs.
