Assistant Conductor Amor Artis – New York, NY Part-time, Temporary

Assistant Conductor
Amor Artis – New York, NY
Part-time, Temporary
Assistant Conductor Amor Artis

(New York NY)
Amor Artis, a superlative chorus and chamber orchestra, is looking for a young and talented person, between the ages of 20 and 29, to fill the part-time position of Assistant Conductor for the 2013-2014 season. The ideal candidate has a strong educational background in choral and/or orchestral conducting, and is either currently studying one or both of those fields or has recently completed his or her studies. The primary focus of this position will be choral music.

The Amor Artis Chorus has 40 singers, most of whom are amateurs, but all of whom have a strong music background. There is one professional singer in each section. Rehearsals are fast-paced, intense, and run like a fully professional group. Performance standards are exceptionally high. The chorus performs four concerts per year, and also sings polyphony at a liturgy on the third Sunday of every month at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in Soho, as well as on special religious feast days. Repertoire for the liturgies centers on the Renaissance masters. Composers being performed in the 2013-2014 concert season are: Bach, Barber, Bernstein, Haydn, Ives, Mendelssohn, Palestrina, Vaughan-Williams, Webern, and a newly commissioned work. In addition, the chorus will be continuing its recording sessions for a CD release of the Complete Bach Motets on its own recording label, Amor Artis Edition.
Rehearsals for the chorus are held almost every Thursday evening between September and early June, with two extra rehearsals within the week prior to each concert. Most rehearsals are held on the Upper West Side and in SoHo.

The Amor Artis Chamber Orchestra is a fully professional ensemble, comprising some of New York City’s finest modern instrument players, and performs with the chorus in many of its concerts.

The job of Assistant Conductor of Amor Artis is an educational position, offering firsthand experience working closely with the Music Director and with the professional singers in the organization. This is a great opportunity for someone seriously committed to pursuing a career in choral conducting, or someone who wants to better understand the choral field to strengthen his or her work as an orchestral conductor. Music Director Stephen Somary will offer private training in both choral and orchestral conducting to the selected candidate. He or she will be given at least one live conducting opportunity during the season and, if desired, will be given private sessions in the art of accompanying a chorus on the piano.
