Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for the overall artistic vision, direction and quality of the musical product, primarily though programming and conducting the seven-concert series each season. Also participates in other community concerts and education programs as needed. Additionally the Music Director works directly with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to develop community relationships necessary for the growth of the orchestra.
Requirements: Musician of the highest quality that has demonstrated success in leading a professional ensemble in repertoire that spans four centuries, from Baroque to 21st century. Be well versed in orchestral, major choral, and operatic literature. Demonstrated skills in innovative programming that will further the ICO brand promise of “Intimate-Classic-Original” concert experiences for ICO patrons. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills for both working internally, and for building relationships in the community.
Compensation: Commensurate with experience
Organization Description: The Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra (ICO) will mark its 29th season in 2013- 2014. The ICO is a fully professional orchestra comprised of 34 talented and dedicated musicians from the Indianapolis area, as well as surrounding states. The ICO annually presents a seven-concert series, utilizing two formats: Masterworks and Pops. This includes the traditional holiday presentation of Handel’s Messiah in both the full oratorio, and a shorter community Sing-Along. The orchestra’s performances are made available to the community via a weekly radio broadcast each Monday evening from 10-11 pm, on the local public radio affiliate (WFYI, FM 90.1). The ICO also provides professional accompaniment for other area arts organizations and provides an array for educational programs. The ICO sponsors a national composition competition annually in conjunction with its role as the Orchestra- in-Residence with the Indiana State University Contemporary Music Festival. The ICO is the professional Orchestra-in-Residence at the new 450-seat Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts on the campus of Butler University, and will perform three of its seven concerts in this venue.
