Portland Ensign Choir & Orchestra seeks a part-time Orchestra Conductor to lead its 50-piece orchestra

Portland Ensign Choir & Orchestra seeks a part-time Orchestra Conductor to lead its 50-piece orchestra.  The ideal candidate should be an experienced, energetic and disciplined conductor, able to effectively challenge and inspire a combination of skilled amateur and professional instrumentalists.  Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with Music Director in concert programming
  • Plan and lead all orchestra rehearsals
  • Conduct orchestral works in concert as well as some combined choral/orchestral works
  • Attend 2-4 Board Meetings or Administrative Council meetings per season
  • Oversee recruitment of needed orchestral musicians

Performance season runs September through May, with 2 concert programs per season (usually in December & May).  For each of these concert programs the Orchestra rehearses 2.5 hours once per week for 6-8 weeks culminating in 2-3 performances (all in the Portland, Oregon metro area).  Repertoire consists of many combined choir/orchestra works, with 2-3 purely orchestral selections in each program.  The organization is in the process of planning additional all-orchestral music concerts for future seasons.

A modest stipend is available for this position, and will be discussed upon reviewing a candidates experience and qualifications.

About Portland Ensign Choir & Orchestra:

Since its founding concert in 2005, Portland Ensign Choir and Orchestra has performed throughout the Portland, Oregon region with favorite American folk tunes and hymns, stirring patriotic anthems, delightful Christmas music and classical repertoire by composers of all periods.  The choir and orchestra have performed with northwest organizations such as the Newport Symphony Orchestra, the Willamette Falls Symphony and with national stars like concert violinist Jenny Oaks Baker, and Broadway singer/actor/recording artist Dallyn Vail Bayles.  Attendance ranges from 5,000-7,000 audience members each season.

The Portland Ensign Choir and Orchestra is a 501(c)(3) (non-profit) organization comprised of over 120 singers and 50 instrumentalists.  Members or the choir and orchestra are selected by audition and volunteer their time with some traveling as far as 100 miles each way to participate in rehearsals and performances.
