JUNEAU SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (JSO), ALASKA
Position: Music Director/Conductor. The orchestra is a volunteer community orchestra consisting of 65-75 local musicians plus musicians from nearby communities. Also included are the Juneau Symphony Chorus, guest musicians, and soloists. The 2013-14 season is the 51st season of the group which seeks to continue its musical growth. The orchestra’s season runs from September to June and includes four subscription concerts, an annual chamber music showcase, one Friday morning concert for 4th and 5th graders, and a student symphony for all ages. Each subscription concert has an average of eight rehearsals per concert, spread out over a one-month period. Each concert is repeated once. There is an annual youth Solo Competition. The board is administered by volunteer community members and players and a full-time executive director. The present conductor is stepping down after a tenure of 15 years including the 2013-14 season. Finalists will be guest conductors during the 2014-15 season and the new conductor will be announced in the spring of 2015. Responsibilities: Select repertoire, schedule rehearsals, and conduct four subscription concerts as well as one annual school concert. Recruit local musicians as needed in collaboration with section leaders. Work with the Executive Director to coordinate all aspects of concerts and rehearsals, order and prepare music, and develop player skills. Develop long-range plans. Work within budget and policies cooperatively with the Board and Executive Director; be visible in the community; and work collaboratively with music educators and young musicians. Qualifications: Minimum of a Bachelor of Music is required, and an advanced degree in conducting is preferred. A minimum of three years of experience conducting orchestral and choral groups. Experience in working with non-profit organizations. Effective communication skills in writing and speaking. A broad knowledge of repertoire to select works appropriate to the JSO and its audience. Salary: Specified in an employment agreement between the Board and the music director. Salary range: $30,000 with consideration D.O.E. Benefits are negotiable. Deadline: Dec. 6, 2013.
