POSITION TITLE: Music Director and Symphony Conductor
Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestras of Atlanta:
MYSO nurtures, trains and develops a culturally diverse group of students, age 13-21, from over 10 Metro Atlanta counties. MYSO offers concerts, tours, chamber music and master classes that create opportunities for youth at all levels of musical experience to develop socially and artistically while participating in one of Atlanta’s foremost instrumental training and education programs.
The Music Director and Symphony Conductor for the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestras of Atlanta (or “Music Director” for shorthand) provides artistic leadership for MYSO, oversees the training and artistic development of all MYSO students in preparation of rehearsals and performances and personally conducts the Symphony Orchestra. The Music Director is charged with maintaining the standard of excellence among the artistic staff through interaction, evaluation, example, curricula and artistic leadership. The Music Director also serves as an ambassador to the greater community including professional musicians, public and private school music teachers, private music teachers and potential students.
The Music Director reports to and works with the executive director to engage qualified artistic staff to serve as conductors, coaches, sectional leaders and instructors. The Music Director is responsible for developing and executing a recruitment program, maintaining close liaison with school and private artistic instructors, and carrying out public relations activities on behalf of MYSO.
The Music Director is an artistic advisor to the MYSO board and its committees. The Music Director attends the regularly scheduled board meetings and committee meetings where artistic input and expertise is needed. The Music Director carries out all required duties in a manner consistent with the policies, procedures, goals and objectives established by the Board of Directors.
Master’s degree in Conducting or comparable experience
As Music Director:
Attend and participate in all Board of Directors meetings as well as fund raising and cultivation events as requested and available.
Meet annually with all artistic staff to evaluate and review the performance and progress of each of the MYSO orchestra’s annual and long-term artistic goals and objectives.
Annually evaluate MYSO attendance policy, overall accomplishments, strengths and weaknesses of the MYSO program.
Participate in all artistic staff meetings to confer with other artistic staff on issues pertaining to: student development, repertoire, auditions, artistic requirements and excerpts for auditions and other issues impacting the MYSO orchestras and ensembles.
Evaluate the literature selections made by the other MYSO conductors. Communicate with the conductor of the respective orchestra if the suitability of a particular piece is in question.
Assist with the recruitment of students by direct solicitation, development of recruitment materials, workshops, and by fostering positive relationships with schoolteachers and private music teachers.
Assist in efforts to bring a broader audience to MYSO concerts, present a consistent, polished message about MYSO, and help secure new funding sources.
Establish relationships with community organizations to foster recognition of MYSO, to identify performance opportunities for orchestras and ensembles, and to encourage fund raising.
Adjudicate Concerto Competition and Scholarship Auditions, and audition players for all orchestras and ensembles as needed. Write recommendations upon request of Symphony Orchestra players.
Conduct all Symphony rehearsals and performances as required. Concerts include: 3 yearly concerts, Fall, Gala and Spring. Any additional concerts, including international tours, will be scheduled and organized in consultation with the Board of Directors and the Executive Director.
In consultation with Executive Director, audition and confirm arrangements with guest artists.
Develop Symphony musician capabilities through the selection of repertoire, sectional coaching and interaction with professional musicians and other innovative programming as appropriate for the Symphony.
Select the repertoire the Symphony, in consultation with the Executive Director, to ensure a quality performance in the assigned number of rehearsals for each concert preparation period.
Work with the Executive Director to determine and meet deadlines for programming and scheduling of rehearsals and sectionals.
Work with the librarian to prepare all string parts including bowing and fingerings; prepare parts with measure numbers and phrase markings for woodwinds, brass and percussion.
Participate in annual auditions evaluating the skills and techniques of MYSO applicants. Make the final determination of applicants to be accepted and their placement within the Symphony and/or ensembles.
Facilitate communication and relationships with and between the Symphony musicians to ensure positive working environment; working with the Executive Director, resolve disciplinary issues as needed.
