Position: Music Director & Conductor. Full-time temporary position. Responsibilities: Conduct the North State Symphony, including rehearsals and concerts; program concerts, select guest artists, and oversee orchestra personnel; lead fundraising efforts for the orchestra and serve as a cultural ambassador to both Chico and Redding, including extensive public speaking, pre-concert talks prior to each major concert, sponsorship solicitation, and capital campaigning. Report monthly to Boards of Directors. Teach in the Department of Music & Theatre in the candidate’s area of specialty. The orchestra is in its 13th season, and is the only professional orchestra north of Sacramento and the Bay Area, functioning as an Ensemble-in-Residence at CSUC. The ensemble is a paid per-service orchestra composed of approximately 75 musicians from northern California and southern Oregon. The board of directors is split into two regions (Chico and Redding). The season runs from September through May, and currently has a series of four masterworks concerts, two chamber concerts, one holiday classical concert, and an outreach schools concert. The current budget is approximately $450,000. Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and needs of the department. Qualifications: Must have 3-5 years prior experience as music director and conductor with a professional orchestra. dynamic leader with a proven record of success in outreach, fundraising, and orchestral development; strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills. Evidence of promise as a teacher of undergraduate students. The minimum educational requirement for appointment to this position is a PhD, DM, or DMA (strongly preferred); ABD and Master’s degree will receive consideration. (Preferred:) The successful candidate should have a commitment to diversity and social justice as evidenced in their record of teaching, scholarship, and/or service. Proven experience as an orchestral instrumentalist with a background in strings is preferred. The candidate should have demonstrated exceptional musicianship and conducting skills; a record of success in audience relations and innovative programming; and strong teaching skills.
