International Institute for Conductors is pleased to announce the appointment of Grammy nominated conductor Dr. James K. Bass to the Institute teaching faculty. Dr. Bass is currently Director of Choral Studies at the University of South Florida School of Music and Artistic Director of the Tampa Bay Master Chorale. He conducts the USF University Chamber Singers, Collegium and Collegiate Singers and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in choral conducting, literature and philosophy. He was previously on the music faculties at Western Michigan University and the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
Bass was one of only 20 singers selected by master conductor Ton Koopman of the Amsterdam Baroque Soloists for a presentation of Cantatas by J.S. Bach in Carnegie Hall, and he was an auditioned member of Robert Shaw’s workshop choir at Carnegie Hall. He has performed as a bass soloist at Winchester Cathedral in London, sung three world premieres of major works, and he appears on CD recordings on the Albany and Seraphic Fire Media labels. He is also a bass soloist and Chorusmaster for Seraphic Fire, theMiami based professional choir, and has served as choirmaster for the Classical Music Festival inEisenstadt, Austria.
Dr. Bass will join master teachers Robert Gutter,Ovidiu Balan and Charles Gambetta from June 21-July 4, 2014 for the Institute’s Conducting Choral Masterpieces workshop, a new program designed to provide conductors with opportunities that most choral and instrumental curricula are not able to offer. The workshop repertoire includes 4 masterpieces from the choral repertoire: the Mozart Requiem, Brahms A German Requiem, the Dvořák Te Deum and the Poulenc Gloria. Participating conductors will each receive 230 minutes of instructional time on the podium including sessions with piano sextet and vocal quartet, full chorus with piano sextet, full orchestra and orchestra with full chorus, and all conductors will perform on two of 4 public concerts.
