New Choral Conducting Workshop for Chorus with Orchestra June 21–July 4, 2014


The International Institute for Conductors is pleased to announce the addition of an exciting new summer choral conducting workshop with chorus and full orchestra. The Conducting Choral Masterpieces™ workshop offers both aspiring and experienced conductors unprecedented opportunities to work with a professional orchestra and professional choir on 4 iconic masterpieces of the choral/orchestral repertoire.


The Institute will accept up to 20 conductors for 13 days of conducting study and performance in Bacau, Romania with 4 veteran conductors who have more than 75 years of teaching experience between them. Grammy nominated choral conductor James Bass, Director of Choral Studies at the University of South Florida, Director of the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay and Chorusmaster of Seraphic Fire joins Robert Gutter, Conductor Emeritus, Springfield Symphony (MA) and Music Director Emeritus, Philharmonia of Greensboro; Ovidiu Balan, Music Director of the Bacau Philharmonic and Charles Gambetta, creator of the Laban inspired Embodied Conducting™ method for this one-of-a-kind program.


The workshop repertoire includes Mozart’s Requiem, Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem, the Dvořák Te Deum and the Poulenc Gloria. Participating conductors each receive 230 minutes of podium time including sessions with piano sextet and vocal quartet, full chorus with piano sextet, full orchestra and orchestra with full chorus. The faculty will also present classes in vocal techniques for conductors, score study, musicianship and the Embodied Conducting™ method, and all workshop conductors will perform movements from the workshop repertoire on 2 of 4 public concerts.


The fee, US $2,895, includes hotel (double occupancy with breakfast) for 13 nights. Applications are accepted until the program is full, but those submitted by March 31, 2014 receive priority consideration.
