Ten participants will get an intense masterclass experience over seven days in Mikkeli, Finland, working with maestro Sasha Mäkilä and St. Michel Strings chamber orchestra. The course consists of four rehearsals and a public concert in the beautiful Mikaeli concert hall as well as evening sessions where we will work either with a pianist or an ensemble formed by the participants.
Each participant will enjoy 20 minutes daily podium time with the orchestra, plus the concert on July 2. The repertoire consists of both Finnish and international string orchestra classics, and the focus of the masterclass will be conducting technique and communication skills with the orchestra. Participants are allowed to videotape all the sessions. All participants are expected to bring their instrument and join the orchestra during the rehearsals as well as in concert.
What makes this masterclass special is the presence of maestro Valery Gergiev, since the masterclass will take place exactly during the XXII Gergiev Festival Mikkeli. The participants will have access to all rehearsals of Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, and there is also a possibility to attend some of the festival concerts provided there are free seats left. The soloists on this year’s festival include such international stars as violinist Leonidas Kavakos and pianist Alexander Toradze.
The course fee will be 1240 EUR total, consisting of a 100 EUR reservation fee and the remaining 1140 EUR to be paid before or on the first day of the masterclass.
There will be a limited number of places for passive participants who will be willing to play in the masterclass orchestra.
