The Summit Symphony Orchestra of Summit, New Jersey is currently accepting applications for Music Director beginning with the 2015-2016 season. Qualified candidates will be asked to select the repertoire and to conduct the orchestra for one of its concerts during the 2014-2015 season as part of the application process.

This includes, but is not limited to, the selection of appropriately challenging programs for concerts and successful direction of the orchestra in weekly rehearsals and concerts. The Music Director is also expected to provide significant leadership for the orchestra with regard to fundraising, promotion, and recruiting efforts. The primary goals of the orchestra include providing an opportunity for its members to develop musically and providing a source of cultural enrichment for the Summit community; the position of the Music Director is key for the orchestra to achieve those goals.
The ideal candidate for the position will possess the following qualities:

• An interest in a long-term commitment to improving and maintaining the quality of the orchestra
• Experience dealing with personnel issues in an orchestra setting (including recruiting)
• Organizational skills including demonstrated experience with:
o Promoting orchestral performance within the community
o Leading fundraising initiatives for community-based groups
o Securing soloists for orchestral performances
• Enthusiasm for volunteer-based community arts programs
The Summit Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1938 by the Summit Board of Recreation with the dual purpose of (1) providing an arena for qualified non-professional musicians to read and perform orchestral music and (2) presenting orchestral concerts, free of charge, to residents of Summit and the surrounding areas. Currently, the roster of musicians for the orchestra includes about 65 active members. Rehearsals are held normally at 7:30 pm on Wednesday nights in Summit (at either the high school or the middle school). The concert schedule consists of three or four concerts per season open free of charge to people of all ages, and held at either the high school or the middle school on Sunday afternoons. Programs consist of orchestral music by the great classical composers, and the orchestra is well-known for obtaining outstanding soloists to perform with it.
