POSITION: We are looking for an individual with the experience and interest to assume the combined position of Music Director and Assistant/Associate Conductor (see following) 

JOB TITLES: 
1) Music Director of Youth Orchestra and Symphony Education programs at the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music and Arts. 
2) Assistant/Associate Conductor of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra (title commensurate with experience) 

REPORTS TO: 
1) Managing Director Cape Cod Conservatory of Music and Arts 
2) Artistic Director Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra 

JOB LOCATIONS: Cape Cod. Candidates should live on Cape Cod or within 1 hour’s drive of Cape Cod. 

JOB SUMMARIES: 
1) Serve as Music Director and Conductor of the Youth Orchestra and Education programs of the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music and Arts 
2) The Assistant/Associate conductor shall assist the Artistic Director and staff in all matters related to the artistic administration of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra. Serve as backup or “cover” conductor for the Artistic Director and all guest conductors for all services and/or concerts of the CCSO, including without limitation,subscription concerts, other concerts of a classical nature and all Pops concerts. Title of Assistant or Associate Conductor dependent upon previous experience. 

ABOUT THE CAPE COD CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC AND ARTS AND THE CAPE COD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 

The Cape Cod Conservatory of Music & Arts is the premier learning and performing arts center on Cape Cod. The Conservatory offers instruction in all major instrument groups, vocal instruction, and classes in art, dance and drama. Campuses in Falmouth and West Barnstable offer students of all ages the opportunity to discover – or rediscover – their passions for the arts. A Youth Orchestra, presently with 48 members, was formed 2010.www.capecodconservatory.org 

The Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra is a highly respected full symphonic ensemble with 75 contract members and second only to the Boston Symphony Orchestra in budget in Massachusetts. The CCSO celebrated its 50th Anniversary Season in 2012. Each year, the CCSO performs a 5-concert classical series (Sat evening, Sun. afternoon) a 3-concert Pops series that includes three performances each in October and February; 6 performances of the Holiday Pops in December. The CCSO currently performs a 2-concert Education series and various summer concerts .

MUSIC DIRECTOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (1):

  • Serve as conductor for the CCSCMA Youth Orchestra, responsible for all musical instruction, direction, leadership, community engagement and recruitment. Also serve as conductor of Music Memory, Young People’s Concert and any other educational programs as needed.
  • Plan and conduct all rehearsals and performances
  • Program repertoire for the entire season that is age and skills-appropriate, inspiring and enjoyable for the students, and that will effectively develop the skills of the ensemble
  • Formulate and pursue an active strategy to recruit new students for all levels (three) of the Youth Orchestra. Visit classrooms and private studios as part of recruiting process
  • Oversee planning and implementation of placement auditions for the ensemble
  • Be available for media events, fund-raising promotions, speaking engagements, development meetings and activities, administrative meetings and other activities as determined and identified by management

Young People’s Concerts duties include:

  • In conjunction with the Managing Director, Artistic Director, Education Director and, Director of Concert Operations, program and conduct Young People’s Concerts.
  • Work with Education Director in writing the YPC script to integrate thematic and educational materials with DOE guidelines.
  • Work with Education Director and Concert Production to assume oversight of concert production logistics.

Music Memory duties:

  • Lead and conduct all Music Memory orchestral rehearsals and performances
  • Plan program, talks and musical selections (overture and finale) in conjunction with Education Director and Director of Concert Operations
  • Work with Education Director and Concert Production to assume oversight of concert production logistics.

ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE CONDUCTOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (2)

  • Attend all rehearsals to be able to assist the Artistic Director with concert production requirements such as providing verbal feedback on artistic matters relating to repertory (balance, intonation, dynamics, ensemble issues).
  • Attend all concerts to assist Artistic Director with production elements such as cueing audio/visual requirements for the performance and other off stage artistic or conducting requirements
  • The Assistant/Associate conductor will possess strong personal communication skills and should be able to create an environment that is conducive to open and direct communications. S/He will have a passion for orchestral music and education and possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • If requested, assist with the artistic development of the orchestra by evaluating the performances of the ensemble and individual musicians and reporting the observed performance levels both written and verbal on a regular basis to the Artistic Director and management.
  • The Assistant/Associate conductor will possess strong personal communication skills and should be able to create an environment that is conducive to open and direct communications. S/He will have a passion for orchestral music and education and possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • The Assistant/Associate conductor shall assist the Artistic Director and staff in all matters related to the artistic administration of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra.
  • Serve as backup or “cover” conductor for the Artistic Director and all guest conductors for all services and/or concerts of the CCSO, including without limitation subscription concerts, other concerts of a classical nature and all Pops concerts.
  • Live within no more than a one hours driving distance from Cape Cod
  • Aggressively and professionally promote the image and visibility of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra in the southeastern Massachusetts area.

AUDITION PROCESS 
Semi-finalists will be chosen based upon DVD submissions and invited to interview with the CCSO as early as April 1, 2014. Finalists will subsequently be asked to return for a multi-day interview.
