The Frederick Symphony, a community orchestra in Frederick, MD, welcomes applications for the position of Music Director. Priority will be given to applications received by March 31, 2014. Finalists will be invited to conduct a FSO concert during the 2014-2015 Season. The successful candidate will be appointed in June of 2015.

The Position: The Music Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the fulfillment of the orchestra’s artistic mission and its image in the community. He or she is responsible for the repertoire, programming and artistic production, and has ultimate authority for the selection and appointment of musicians. In addition to conducting weekly rehearsals and five concert programs during the season (September through June), the Music Director also works closely with the Board of Directors to assist with fund-raising and community outreach.

The Orchestra: The Frederick Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra that is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization in Frederick, MD. FSO was founded in 1997 and performs five (5) concert programs annually. Members are amateur musicians from the local community with the exception of principal string players, who are paid an honorarium. The orchestra also sponsors an annual Young Artist Competition for local high school musicians. Rehearsals take place on Thursday nights at Frederick Community College, with typically two (2) dress rehearsals before a performance. Previous accomplishments include but are not limited to: Beethoven Symphony #9, Shostakovich Symphony #5, Dvorak Symphony #7.

Candidate Profile: The ideal candidate will possess exceptional musicianship and conducting skills; significant conducting and teaching experience, including work with both amateur and professional musicians; knowledge of a broad range of repertoire; strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills; vision, passion, and the ability to continue to make music relevant and exciting for existing and new audiences. Previous or current music directorship or comparable experience preferred.

Compensation: Part-time salary paid monthly for a total of $20,000 annually.
