Position: Music Director. The orchestra was founded in 2006and conducted until 2013 by maestro John Eells. The orchestra presents five concerts per year to southern New England audiences. Members must be 18 or older, demonstrate instrumental proficiency, and be willing to perform on a non-compensatory basis. Responsibilities: Leadership: Advocate for the orchestra; partner closely with the NaBSCO Board of Directors; Engage and recruit members of the community as audience members; Actively recruit orchestra members for the ensemble; Lead fundraising efforts for the orchestra; Build and maintain excellent relationships with donors, community members, NaBSCO members, RI Philharmonic Orchestra and Music school and professional musicians in the community; and comport themselves in a professional, respectful and appropriate manner at all times. Management of the Orchestra: Lead rehearsals and performances; Develop[ challenging and fiscally responsible programming for NaBSCO; Be involved in decisions concerning concert locations and dates; Determine sources and costs for all music to be performed; Write program notes, short concert descriptions and concert titles, and collect soloist photos and bios for the yearly program book; Secure volunteer soloists; Provide orchestra members with rehearsal and concert schedule; Field e-mail inquiries from potential new orchestra members, organize and adjudicate auditions for NaBSCO; Determine seating within each section; Lead artistic meetings and attend NaBSCO board and committee meetings as necessary; Communicate regularly with NaBSCO orchestra and/or board and committee members about ensemble needs, concerns and progress; and Abide by all budgetary parameters determined by NaBSCO. Qualifications: Demonstrated success as a conductor and music teacher; Extensive knowledge of orchestral literature at all levels; Knows the standard literature from an interpretive aspect; Has intimate knowledge of the technical and musical problems the players will encounter in specific pieces; Perform or have performed at a high level (professional preferred) on an instrument; Strong conducting skills; Have a good understanding of orchestral techniques; Understand and apply principles and accepted practices of music education; Understand the needs of the ensemble, and successfully and respectfully address them; Inspire and motivate the ensemble; Must have high musical expectations for the members while recognizing that they are volunteers of the organization; Able to work respectfully with diverse groups of people; Excellent communication skills; Be able to work in a team; and Possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and/or Music Education required, Master’s or higher preferred.
