Job Description

The Music Program in the College of Business, Arts, Sciences and Education at Friends University is seeking to fill a vacancy for an adjunct instructor for fall 2014 to conduct the University Community Orchestra.  The orchestra is a combination of community members, students and faculty who have a long tradition of music making at the university.  The ensemble rehearses one evening a week for 2-2.5 hours and is scheduled to perform two concerts during the 2014-15 academic year.  The conductor would be expected to choose appropriate literature for a community/student ensemble and develop a meaningful learning/artistic experience for members and audiences.  The Music Program is accredited by the National Association for Schools of Music (NASM). Teaching duties for Fall 2014 begin August 19.  The rehearsal is for Tuesday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. for 15 weeks.


  • Develop and execute an instructional/rehearsal plan for maximum learning.
  • Demonstrate an excellent knowledge of orchestral literature and pedagogy appropriate for a community/student ensemble.
  • Demonstrate consistency and fairness to all members of the group. 
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and progress.
  • Submit semester grades, assessment and retention information in a timely manner.
  • Work with Fine Arts Division staff to maintain orchestral library.
  • Guide members in preparation for public performances. 


Skills & Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree in Music is preferred. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree plus 30 credits of graduate work in music or Bachelor’s Degree plus significant, recognized professional performance experience could be considered.
  • Working knowledge of orchestral performance literature and pedagogy.
  • Experience conducting orchestras.
