Job Title: Assistant Conductor Organization: Etowah Youth Orchestras Job type: Full-time Duties and responsibilities: The Etowah Youth Orchestras seeks a dynamic, energetic conductor and string educator to join the staff of one of the most celebrated youth orchestra programs in the country. The Assistant Conductor will serve as the Lead Educator of the EYO program, teaching Beginning and Intermediate Orchestra classes to fifth- and sixth-grade students in the Etowah County School System. The Assistant Conductor will also serve as the cover conductor for the Etowah Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Etowah String Philharmonic, and the June Moore Bugg Prelude Strings, and will be an integral part of the artistic team of the EYO program, working closely with the Music Director and the Associate Conductor. Additional duties and responsibilities will include some administrative work in regards to the in-school orchestra program.

Requirements: Bachelors degree in music (preferably music education or conducting) required, Masters degree in music preferred. Orchestral conducting and string teaching experience, along with proficiency on a string instrument, is highly preferred. Because of the nature of this position, residency is required. Additional teaching and performing opportunities may be available through the Gadsden Community School for the Arts, local colleges and universities, and local musical ensembles. The successful candidate will have strong organizational and communication skills, and will be a detail-oriented independent thinker with strong initiative and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will possess the ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team, and will have strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Compensation: $25,000-30,000, based on qualifications, experience, and possible additional duties. Benefits offered: Health and dental insurance paid in full by employer after three- month probationary period. Paid vacation based on years of service. ASTA and NAfME membership dues paid by employer after six-month probationary period. Eligible to participate in employer’s retirement program after one year of service. Organization description: Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the Etowah Youth Orchestras has become one of the premiere youth orchestra programs in the United States. In only its 23rd season, the EYO has performed twice at Carnegie Hall, and has presented performance at the Lincoln and Kennedy Centers for the Performing Arts, as well as tour performances in England, Costa Rica, and throughout the United States. The EYO reaches 300 students annually with four after-school ensembles, a chamber music program, and an in-school string orchestra program that services nine schools throughout the county. The EYO has been recognized 12 times by ASCAP for its innovative programming, and was selected as the Continental Harmony award recipient for the State of Alabama. Programs of the EYO have been featured in documentaries on Alabama Public Television and in articles in Band & Orchestra Product News. The EYO is a project of the Gadsden Cultural Arts Foundation and the City of Gadsden.
