Workshop information

This workshop is for those wanting to improve their audition/interview skills, in preparation for professional and academic jobs or entrance into graduate conducting programs.

6 conductors will be invited to participate. Each will receive two 20-minute sessions with the NAU Symphony Orchestra (40 minutes total).

The purpose of these sessions is to practice “auditioning” with a live ensemble. In contrast to many workshops, stick technique will not be the primary focus. Instead, the panelists will assess each conductor’s overall ability to connect with and improve the sound of an orchestra. Most of the panelists’ feedback will be given after the conducting sessions, in order to avoid interruptions to the “audition” process. This will allow participants to maintain authority and focus while on the podium, and to gather rehearsal footage that is suitable for job applications.

In addition to conducting sessions, there will be conducting reviews, student evaluations, discussions on the job market and interviews, as well as question-answer time with the panelists. Each conductor will be told what his/her perceived strengths and weaknesses are and how to make improvements.

The repertoire is Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 and Haydn’s C major Cello Concerto. Participants are expected to prepare two movements of the Shostakovich and one movement of the Haydn.
