Longy School of Music of Bard College seeks a seminario conductor in its Teacher Education department. As a faculty member, this person will have the opportunity to contribute to the vibrant life of a conservatory committed to innovation and civic engagement.

Longy is undergoing a process of growth and radical change unprecedented in its 100-year history. It has evolved from a free-standing institution to a branch campus of Bard College, a top-ranked liberal arts college. The partnership is enabling Longy to expand its educational offerings and to access a wide community of musicians, scholars, and world leaders. In the process, Longy is transitioning from a place that has been focused locally to one that engages with communities and partners around the world and embraces a mission of social change through the study, teaching and practice of music.


Play a leadership role on a team of faculty in Longy’s Sistema Side by Side Orchestra, El Sistema Summer Academy and related programs

Select repertoire, prepare parts, lead sections, and conduct the full orchestra.

Conduct performances or prepare Side by Side Orchestra for visiting conductors

Guide student mentors from the Conservatory in approaches and strategies for effective coaching, teaching, and mentoring of young musicians from El Sistema-inspired nucleos

Evaluate the performance of teaching assistants and mentor; provide ongoing assessment of student mentor progress

Work with Orchestra Manager to assign conservatory mentors to sectionals as appropriate

Must have extensive conducting and teaching experience in El Sistema or El Sistema-inspired music programs.

Must have ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of ages: grade school and high school students, their parents, and conservatory students

Qualified candidates will possess an outstanding record as an educator and conductor, with a strong national or international reputation.

An advanced degree (MM) in conducting, or demonstrated equivalent, is required. Candidates with a minimum of three years of teaching in higher educations are preferred.

Must be available on Saturdays when seminarios are held.

Individuals who have been students of El Sistema preferred.

Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.
