St Petersburg Masterclass 2015

St Petersburg Masterclass 2015

“Great, absolutely phenomenal days” (2013 Participant)

St Petersburg is arguably the home of great conducting and we are delighted to announce that our 2015 international masterclass is open for applications.  We have a really great programme, directed by Jonathan Brett and including Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade.

Tuesday March 31st (arrival) – Thursday April 9 (departure)

Classes start on April 1st and the concert will be on April 8th.

This class is designed to provide an intensive experience for a small group (not more than eight active participants) and provides an opportunity to really develop technical skills and musical understanding of key works from the symphonic repertory.

For 2015 the works to be studied are symphonies by Haydn (No 101 Clock) and Mendelssohn (No 4 Italian), Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade, Smetana’s Vltava, Wagner’s Flying Dutchman overture and Strauß’ Blue Danube waltz.  These provide a variety of technical and musical challenges; as well as covering these in detail, the class aims to provide a significant experience of working with a professional orchestra of high level, both in rehearsal and in a final public concert performance.

Active participants are expected to prepare all the works on the list and the class is structured with two sets of orchestra sessions, each preceded by detailed study of the programmed works with two pianos. Our wonderful pianists understand perfectly how to create orchestra-like sound for conductors and these sessions allow detailed discussion of musical and technical issues as well as personal technical development.

After each section of the program has been studied with pianos, ample orchestra time is provided to gain solid experience of these important works – two 30-minute sessions for each section of the programme. The addition of the rehearsal and concert make a total of over 140 minutes total allocation for each active participant.

Our key objective for all classes is that participants leave with enhanced skills and understanding, together with knowledge of how to continue to develop their skills to maximum advantage.  Added to this is a video recording from the concert and, we hope, some really strong friendships arising from sharing a challenging and inspiring process with others.

Active – £1,600 (€2,000)
Passive – £550 (€700)
