Beginning 2015-16 Season
The Central Illinois Youth Symphony is a nonprofit organization located in Peoria, Illinois. Our mission is to fulfill the need for a superior musical organization that will challenge, educate, and stimulate the young musicians of central Illinois. Each season we serve approximately 175 students from the greater Peoria area. Students who aspire to join the CIYS audition for one of three orchestras, small ensembles, and/or chamber ensembles. We strive to find a place within our organization for all enthusiastic young musicians.
Overview of Position:
The Youth Symphony (YS) Conductor reports directly to the Executive Director and is responsible for the repertoire and programming of the Youth Symphony. The YS Conductor will work collaboratively with other CIYS conductors and staff in planning programming, evaluation, recruitment, and further development of the CIYS organization. The YS Conductor is responsible for ensuring proper student placement within the orchestra and that CIYS Curricular Goals are being met through repertoire selection and instruction during weekly rehearsals. CIYS Curricular Goals include the following general categories: Musical Language, Music Theory, Music Production, and Musical History & Styles.
The successful candidate will be required to lead YS rehearsals throughout the season and commit to performing all YS concerts (schedule finalized prior to auditions). Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings between 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Peoria. Concerts are generally held on Sunday afternoons in November and April. The season runs from August through May, with auditions held on a weekend in May for the following season. The successful candidate will need to be present on-site during Youth Symphony auditions as a resource for audition judges. S/he will also be responsible for hearing all Youth Symphony students perform a seating hearing in August prior to the start of the season and seating them appropriately.
S/he will have experience working with students of all levels, particularly middle school through high school and have a successful record of teaching experience. S/he will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to speak enthusiastically about music education and the CIYS. Applicants must demonstrate a strong ability to create a positive learning environment that also delivers the highest quality of musical excellence in performance. S/he must also be willing to participate in shaping future goals and programs for the organization, in collaboration with the Executive Director, Board, and other key personnel.
Bachelor of Music Education or Music Performance required, Master of Music in Conducting or Music Education strongly preferred.
Compensation: Contracted, on a per-service basis. Amount per service based on experience and expertise.
