ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR

Applications are invited for the new post of Assistant Conductor.

We are seeking an exceptional and inspirational musician to assist Hallé Music Director Sir Mark Elder CBE and visiting conductors to the Hallé, and to conduct the Hallé in public concerts. The Assistant Conductor will also act as Music Director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra, taking direct responsibility for its musical development and performances. This post is generously supported by Help Musicians UK and PZ Cussons.

This post provides an unusual opportunity for a young conductor to advance his/her skills in a sheltered and artistically stimulating environment over a two-year period. The successful candidate will be British, or will have been resident/studying full-time in the UK for three years, and under the age of 35. S/he will have considerable conducting experience, and will be currently undertaking professional conducting engagements.

The post will require a commitment of 200 half-days per annum, for which the post holder will receive an annual package of not less than £24,000 per annum.

The audition process will be in two stages:

Stage 1 – Sunday 4th January 2015 at 10 am, audition with the Hallé Youth Orchestra in Hallé St. Peter’s, Ancoats, Manchester.

Stage 2 – Thursday 8th January 2015 at 2.30pm, audition with the Hallé in Hallé St. Peter’s, Ancoats, Manchester and subsequent interviews.

Successful applicants will be required to be available for both audition dates.

The successful candidate will succeed Jamie Phillips from 1st September 2015. However, duties including Hallé Youth Orchestra auditions to be held in May/June and potential opportunities for session-based work are likely to be offered in advance of the contract start date.

Applications with CV and covering letter by Friday 21st November 2014 to Hanna Derewnicka, Admin Assistant, Hallé Concerts Society, The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, M1 5HA or by email to: hanna.derewnicka@halle.co.uk.
