Opening For Music Director/Conductor of the North Suburban Symphonic Band – Pittsburgh, PA

The North Suburban Symphonic Band (NSSB), which has been performing concerts in the North Hills of Pittsburgh for over 20 years, is seeking applicants to fill the position of Conductor / Music Director beginning with the 2016-17 season. Although this is over two years away, the NSSB plans to have the finalists identified by March, 2015, each of whom would then plan, rehearse and conduct a concert in the 2015-16 season as part of the selection process. The candidates will receive a stipend for this concert regardless of whether he or she is selected as the NSSB’s music director.

Since its inception, the NSSB has developed and maintained a well-deserved reputation for attracting skilled musicians to the band. The band consists of approximately 80 volunteer musicians, some of whom are music educators and other music professionals. The band and has been led by highly competent and dedicated conductors including Warren Mercer, the founder of the band, and the long-time director of the North Hills High School Band.

Its current director, Carl T. Iezzi, has led the band for the past 12 years. Mr. Iezzi taught for 30 years in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, has been on the faculties of several prestigious universities in the area, including Duquesne University and Carnegie Mellon University, and has played with the Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Ballet, Civic Light Opera and other groups.

Our assistant conductor, Sean M. Desguin, is the Elementary Band Director in the Hampton Township School District, where he also directs the High School Percussion Ensemble and is Assistant Director with the Marching Band and Middle School Bands. Mr. Desguin also maintains an active teaching schedule in low brass through his private studio.

Additional background information for Mr. Iezzi and Mr. Desguin is on our website at

The primary responsibilities of the NSSB Music Director are: •Planning season programs in consultation with the band’s assistant conductor,

• Rehearsing the band weekly on Monday evenings, 7:30-9:30 p.m., from September through early May,

• Conducting the symphonic band’s 4 concerts (Sunday afternoons in October, December, March and early May),

• Recruiting musicians as necessary to join the band or fill in to cover the needs for a particular program, and

• Attending meetings of the Board of Directors of NSSB, generally held 5 times each year.

Currently, the Music Director also rehearses the NSSB Big Band and conducts the Big Band concert, held late in July (with a potential repeat performance). Whether this continues to be the responsibility of the new Music Director is open to discussion, based on the selected candidate’s preferences.

The NSSB has been quite fortunate to have developed a long- term relationship with the Greater Pittsburgh Masonic Temple located on Cemetery Lane just off the Perrysville Avenue exit of I279N. Symphonic band concerts and rehearsals are held at this well-equipped facility. The Big Band concert and rehearsals are held at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Highland in McCandless Township (near UPMC Passavant Hospital).

The NSSB is also proud of its family of smaller ensembles, including a Woodwind Ensemble, a Brass Ensemble, and a Dixieland band. The rehearsals and performances of these groups are managed by individuals from the band, and are not the specific responsibility of the Music Director. However, the Music Director maintains oversight of all the groups under the NSSB name. Additional information on these ensembles can be found at
