Description:  The School of Music at the University of Washington announces a full-time Orchestral Conducting position as Senior Artist in Residence on a five-year contract to begin in September 2015. This would be a multi-year, full-time, and 9-month service period appointment.  The School of Music is seeking to appoint a conductor with an active career and demonstrated success conducting in both professional and higher education settings.  Applicants must have experience teaching in a graduate program in orchestral conducting and have a significant knowledge of the orchestral canon as well as contemporary genres.

Responsibilities:  Direct the UW Symphony Orchestra; supervise the Campus Philharmonia and the UW Modern Music Ensemble; teach students orchestral conducting; work closely with the Music Director of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra who currently holds the position as Chair of Orchestral Conducting. UW Faculty will be expected to participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and independent research.

Qualifications:  Doctoral degree or equivalent preferred (or foreign equivalent); A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent is required in Music or the equivalent professional and academic experience; experience as Music Director of a university symphony orchestra; demonstrated experience and commitment to developing close partnerships between university level conducting and orchestral programs and a nationally prominent professional orchestra; experience supervising graduate orchestral conducting students.
