Position Description: The Director of String Activities/Orchestra Conductor/Violin (preferred) is a full-time tenure track position in a school of music offering degrees in music education, music business, music performance, composition and liberal arts with approximately 200 undergraduate and graduate majors and minors.

The Director of String Activities will

  • conduct the university orchestra and provide artistic and academic leadership to the orchestral program at ISU.
  • Teach violin (preferred) or other orchestra string instrument), teach chamber music, and perform in the faculty string quartet.
  • Actively recruit outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to the orchestral program at ISU. The Director of String Activities shall maintain a professional artistic profile that reflects the career of an outstanding orchestra conductor. Other responsibilities will be determined by qualifications, institutional needs, and preference, but may include courses in music education, music literature, or theory. The normal teaching load will be 12 credit hours of course work per semester. Required Qualifications: Successful teaching experience and a completed doctorate of music degree are required.

Additional Requirements

Required Education: Earned doctorate in music.

Required Experience: Three years of experience as orchestral conductor at professional, collegiate, or high school level.

Preferred Education: Earned doctorate in music in orchestral conducting or violin performance or other orchestral string instrument.
