Position Announcement: Music Director

The Georgia Symphony Orchestra (65 year-old regional orchestra based in Marietta, Georgia) welcomes nominations and applications for the position of Music Director, to be available for the 2016-2017 season.

The Position

The music director provides overall musical leadership and direction to the orchestra (professional and volunteer players), the chorus (80-100 members), the professional jazz ensemble and the youth symphony (400 members from grades three to twelve). The music director reports directly to the board of directors and is responsible for the fulfillment of the orchestra’s artistic potential and its community image. S/he is responsible for the repertoire, programming and artistic production within limits set by the budget. S/he has the ultimate authority for the selection, development and replacement of musicians in accordance with working agreements with musicians and guest artists. As the orchestra’s artistic leader, the music director must build and sustain the orchestra’s visibility and involvement in the community. S/he is expected to work closely with the executive director, board and staff in carrying out these responsibilities and to actively participate in the orchestra’s fundraising activities.

Candidate Profile

The desired candidate will posses exceptional musicianship and conducting skills; significant conducting experience, including working with both professional, volunteer and student musicians and working with a chorus director and a chorus. S/he will have significant experience with managing directors of affiliated orchestra programs. The candidate will have knowledge of a broad range of repertoire, have ability to develop imaginative programming of significant value, have strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills. S/he will exhibit vision, passion and ability to make symphonic music relevant and exciting for existing and new audiences and the ability to collaborate with community arts organizations and initiatives. Previous or current music directorship or comparable experience preferred.


Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
