ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR JOB DESCRIPTION Position: Reports to: Works with: Assistant Conductor Music Director, Director of Artistic Planning Director of Education and Community Engagement, Education and Artistic Staff members Statement of the Position: The SDSO seeks a talented and dynamic conductor to serve as the Assistant Conductor. The Assistant Conductor serves as the primary artistic support staff to the Music Director in all rehearsals and concerts during the SDSO season. He or she will be knowledgeable, personable, self-motivated, creative and detail-oriented, and will work with the artistic and education staff to provide a high level of musical expertise for SDSO. The Assistant Conductor is an integral part of both the Artistic and Education departments and serves as one of its key members. The Assistant Conductor also serves as the principal conductor for all Education-related programs, which comprise approximately 25-30 concerts per year. This position will be overseen by the Music Director and Director of Artistic Planning, and will work closely with the Director of Education and Community Engagement, as well as with all members of the SDSO staff and community. The Assistant Conductor is expected to reside in or near San Diego, CA. Candidates must possess the following qualifications: • A minimum of three years’ experience in assisting or directing instrumental ensembles • Thorough knowledge of symphonic repertoire • Ability to run rehearsals efficiently • Proven ability to develop imaginative programming ideas that draw in non-traditional audiences, have significance to the community, membership, and the occasion, while keeping in mind budget constraints • Effective and enthusiastic public speaking skills; ability to communicate the power and joy of live music to various and diverse audiences • Exceptional time management and organizational skills • Authorization to work in the United States Duration of Employment: The appointment is for an initial two year term, commencing Fall 2015 and ending Spring 2017, with a possible extension year-by-year after that point, for a maximum of four consecutive years. Compensation: Salary will be commensurate with experience, to be discussed at time of interview/audition.
