Our specially trained teachers guide students from beginner group instruction to orchestral performance, building life skills and community from a shared love of music.

About this position:

The Harmony Program is seeking a dynamic and entrepreneurial conductor-administrator to lead and manage the growth of a borough-based youth orchestra in Brooklyn, NY. Our existing youth orchestra is comprised of 30 intermediate-level musicians in middle and high school. In addition to leading weekly rehearsals on Saturday mornings, the conductor will establish relationships with potential feeder schools to make the orchestra available to more students in the community.

Jobs, duties, and responsibilities:

  • Plan and lead engaging weekly orchestral rehearsals on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.;
  • Assist in selection of repertoire, in collaboration with program staff, for site-specific recitals and program-wide events;
  • Maintain timely and ongoing communication with assistant conductor, communicating weekly schedule and rehearsal goals;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with students and parents, responding in a timely manner to discipline and attendance issues;
  • Serve as liaison between host-site staff and Harmony Program administrative staff;
  • Pursue relationships with potential feeder-schools in order to increase the ensemble’s size and raise its level of playing;
  • Assist program staff in coordinating dress rehearsals and recitals;
  • Ensure timely submission of student attendance records on shared online spreadsheet;
  • Manage site’s instrument inventory, submitting instrument repair requests as needed and keeping shared online inventory spreadsheet up to date;
  • Attend periodic meetings with Director of Education and Executive Director to plan and debrief.

Applicants must possess the following qualifications:

  • Conducting experience (experience conducting a youth orchestra preferred);
  • A passion for working with youth;
  • Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills;
  • Project management experience preferred;
  • Connections to musical community in New York City helpful, but not required;
  • The ability to commit to weekly rehearsals on Saturday mornings.
