Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic: Apprentice conductor

The Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic seeks an Apprentice Conductor to act as a cover conductor for rehearsals and concerts, occasionally conduct concerts or partial concerts and perform non-conducting duties as assigned. The position begins in the 2015-2016 Season. Candidates must have meaningful orchestral conducting experience in an academic or professional setting, a broad knowledge of orchestral repertoire and concert programming, be fluent and articulate in English and be available and present for both NEPP rehearsals and concerts. Conducting opportunities will depend on the experience of the candidate chosen.

This position is paid an honorarium per-concert week (approximately 8 separate concert weeks, each period between 2-5 days) plus per diem. Travel expenses are not provided.

The Apprentice Conductor position is envisioned as a way for aspiring professional conductors to gain valuable experience through a wide variety of duties with a professional orchestra and staff and through the mentorship of Music Director Lawrence Loh. Our hope is that the Apprentice Conductor will become a visible and active member of our organization while gaining critical experience needed to move on to a bigger position. Our first Apprentice Conductor Michelle Merrill (2012-2015) was recently appointed Assistant Conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
