Position Description: The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) seeks a dynamic and talented

conductor for the position of Assistant Conductor beginning in the 2015.2016 season. The Assistant

Conductor serves as the primary supporting conductor to the Music Director and visiting guest

conductors for all rehearsals and performances. Additionally, the Assistant Conductor is integral to the

MSO’s educational, promotional, and audience and patron development initiatives. Individuals who

demonstrate efficiency, flexibility, creativity, effective communication skills, and a commitment to

classical, pop, educational, and promotional orchestral performances and events will be successful in

Reports to: Music Director; Chief Operating Officer

Works with: Director of Education and Community Engagement; Artistic Planning team; Marketing and

Communications team; Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra musicians, chorus, and staff

Required Qualifications:

 Extensive knowledge of symphonic repertoire and the concert production cycle

 Ability to develop programming ideas in consideration of goals, audience, and budget

 Ability to communicate with audiences of all ages and levels of knowledge

 Authorization to work in the United States

Duration of Employment: the appointment is for an initial term commencing between September, 2015

and January, 2016, and ending on July 15, 2017. The position may be extended year-by-year after the

Job Responsibilities:

Conducting Duties:

 Conduct all education, family, community and promotional rehearsals and performances. The MSO

presents more than 25 educational and community performances each season

 Conduct all state-wide tour and run-out rehearsals and performances, including classical, pops, and

educational tour and run-out programs. The MSO presents more than 15 tour and run-out

performances per season

 Conduct subscription classical, pops and special event rehearsals and performances, as assigned

Cover Conducting Duties

 Provide service as “cover conductor” for classical and pops subscription, and special event rehearsals

and performances. Responsibilities include assisting the Music Director, soloists, and the Librarian,

being prepared to conduct the specified performances at a moment’s notice, and other duties as

Administrative/Other Duties:

 Work closely with the Music Director, Executive Director, and various MSO departments on season,

series, and event planning and programming, guest artist selection, and program development

 Appear at and participate in promotional, educational, audience development, and donor

development events, including speaking and hosting engagements

 Make in-school educational presentations to elementary children. The MSO visits more than 20

schools per season

 Other duties as assigned
