Position: Music Director (MD). Responsibilities: The MD is responsible for conducting, programming, artistic production, and the selection and development of musicians. As the orchestra’s artistic leader, the MD must build and sustain the orchestra’s artistic quality. The MD will also support and assist the orchestra’s educational ad community engagement mission, as well as the orchestra’s marketing and fund raising efforts. The MD works closely with the president and CEO, board of trustees and staff in carrying out these responsibilities. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess exceptional musicianship and conducting skills, significant conducting experience, broad range of repertoire, strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills, and the vision, passion and ability to convey the relevance and excitement of classical music to existing and new audiences. The skills and qualities we are looking for include: Outstanding conducting talent and a proven ability to provide a performance experience of the highest caliber. A creative, sensitive and dynamic vision of concert and season programming that will move and touch audiences in meaningful, authentic ways, and that will correspondingly grow the NBSO audience. Thorough knowledge of the orchestra repertoire and style and performance traditions and practices. Mastery of a broad range of musical styles and the interpretive skills that enable communication of the emotional content of such styles. Effective musical and personal leadership in auditioning, selecting and maintaining the highest quality orchestral personnel. Ability to motivate and elicit the best efforts of orchestra musicians. Ability to select and work with guest artists of the highest caliber. A podium presence sufficient to enhance the quality of the music-making and support the musicians’ physical and emotional well-being. Ability to inspire and communicate musically and verbally, both on and off the stage, with people of all ages. Willingness to support and assist the orchestra’s food raising, marketing, educational, and community outreach activities. Broad knowledge and sensitivity of the role music can play in people’s lives, and a passionate commitment to fulfilling the orchestra’s artistic potential and its potential to impact the community.
