Department: Education Last Revision Date: 4/1/15 Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Serve as conductor for the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra

Determine repertoire for DSYO in collaboration with the DSO’s Music Director and Artistic Administrator

Designate guests artists if necessary for DSYO concert programs with budget considerations  Stays abreast of artistic activities in the youth orchestra field; recommends to the Director of Education new activities that may advance the orchestra’s objectives

Collaborate with the Director of Education and Artistic Administrator in developing long-range artistic plans for the orchestra such as: subscription concerts, special concerts, chamber ensemble programs, tours, etc.

Assist the Director of Education in playing a visible and active role in the community; helps develop the overall public image of the orchestra in the community and beyond. Speak publicly when called upon to do so as an advocate for the DSYO and DSO and music education and provide leadership in the arts community as relates to music education for youth.

Serve on the adjudication committee for DSYO auditions and assist in determining placements and seating in the orchestra

Maintain effective communication with DSYO members, parents, coaches, and DSO staff including: Communicating rehearsal notes, instrumentation, equipment and library needs to the Training Programs Coordinator for distribution to participants

Assist in the development and implementation of a recruitment program in the local community through the public schools and their music instructors

Meet with the other Conductors of the DSO’s Civic Youth Ensembles to coordinate the events, policies and artistic direction of the orchestras, seat the orchestras, and coordinate with the Conductors the planning and programming of the orchestras.

Assist in fund raising efforts and developing relationships with local and state governments, music organizations, and patrons and potential patrons, which relationships are intended to increase the exposure, opportunities and funding of the DSYO

Attend Education Steering Committee meetings as possible and provide reports on artistic activities as needed

Perform other duties as may be necessary. Position Qualifications: Master’s Degree or equivalent professional experience preferred. Minimum of five years’ experience in music education, or in leading a full orchestra. Must have proven ability to exercise leadership in developing the total artistic quality of an orchestra.
