The Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra is seeking to appoint a Conductor/Music Director to commence at the start of the 2017-2018 season.

The Position
The conductor/music director reports directly to the board and is responsible for the fulfillment of the orchestra’s artistic potential and its image in the community; works with the board’s artistic committee to determine repertoire, programming and artistic production; has ultimate authority for the selection, development, and replacement of musicians; builds and sustains the orchestra’s visibility and involvement in the community; participates actively in the orchestra’s fundraising activities; works closely with the executive director, board president, artistic committee chair, and staff to fulfill all responsibilities.

Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess exceptional musicianship and conducting skills; conducting experience, including work with professional musicians; knowledge of a broad range of repertoire; strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills; vision, passion, and ability to make symphonic music relevant and exciting for existing and new audiences. Previous or current music directorship or comparable experience preferred. Special consideration will be given to candidates willing to reside in Wichita Falls.

The Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra
The Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra (WFSO) was originally founded in the 1920’s and reformed after World War II in December of 1947. The non-profit organization presents five subscription concerts each season, employing approximately 65-70 professional musicians and featuring outstanding guest artists and soloists. The WFSO also presents educational programs in local schools. The organization is governed by a 15-member board of directors and is supported by an executive director and assistant director. The WFSO operates debt-free with a current budget of $700,000 and an endowment of $1.2 million.

Wichita Falls (population 104,000) is home to Midwestern State University, Sheppard Air Force Base, and numerous cultural and artistic organizations. Located between Oklahoma City and Dallas/Fort Worth, the city serves as a regional hub for the north central Texas area.

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Audition Dates
Conductors selected for audition will be invited to conduct the WFSO during regularly scheduled subscription concerts in the 2016-2017 season. Applicants must be available for audition during one of three weeks: September 25-October 1, 2016; November 6-12, 2016; or February 12-18, 2017.
