Metropolitan Youth Symphony Music Director (Portland, OR)
In its 42nd season, the Metropolitan Youth Symphony serves approximately 500 young musicians in the Portland metropolitan area and southwest Washington. The mission of MYS is to educate, develop, and promote young musicians. We believe that the study of music is a vehicle to promote life lessons such as discipline, commitment, and teamwork, and that it is important to encourage the whole student. As such, we structure our programs to give our students the best performance opportunities possible while encouraging balance in student’s lives and involvement in activities outside of MYS. We make music education and performance opportunities available to musicians at all levels of experience and ability, offering 12 ensembles that include orchestra, band, Jazz, and string ensembles. Each season MYS presents 3 concerts in professional concert halls, 8 community concerts throughout the Portland/Vancouver area, and 15 outreach concerts at underserved schools. In addition we have a mid-week chamber music program that performs an annual concert and performs in multiple engagements throughout the area, and a beginning strings class for low-income youth. The annual budget of the organization is approximately $600,000. For more information about MYS, please visit the MYS website at www.playmys.org.
