Appalachian state university Director of Orchestral Activities

The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track nine-month faculty position to begin in August 2016.

POSITION: Director of Orchestral Activities. Seeking a dynamic musician, conductor, and leader for the orchestral program, who will coordinate and administer orchestral activities of the school, rehearse and conduct the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra and an annual opera production, teach instrumental conducting, and participate in music education activities. The successful candidate will be expected to participate fully in the responsibilities of faculty membership, including recruitment, student advisement, curriculum development, outreach to public schools, and university service.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned depending upon the applicant’s expertise and the needs of the school, which may include teaching orchestral methods classes and supervision of orchestral student teachers.

RANK AND SALARY: Lecturer, Instructor, Assistant or Associate Professor. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

REQUIREMENTS: A distinguished record as a conductor and educator. Teaching experience at the college level preferred. Evidence of experience with pre-college orchestral programs preferred. Doctorate preferred and must be completed by September 15, 2016 for appointment to tenure track; other applicants will be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor or Lecturer.
