The MMF Conducting Institute is a 3-week intensive program for aspiring conductors who wish to gain experience in the symphonic and operatic fields. Participants will work with leading Guest Faculty including Gustav Meier and Larry Rachleff and resident Faculty Jacomo Barios and Michael Rossi. Conducting Institute participants will receive weekly lessons, daily conducting classes, and the opportunity to explore conducting techniques in real settings including festival rehearsals, chamber performances, opera staging rehearsals, and orchestra readings. Students have the option to participate as either assistant conductors or as auditors.

Highlights of the Assistant Conductor Program: 

  • Conducting Sessions with Resident and Guest Faculty with Full Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Piano
  • Opportunity to Conduct in an Orchestral Concert
  • Opportunity to conduct at least two orchestral readings with the MMF Symphony Orchestra, overseen by guest and resident faculty
  • Serve as assistant conductors for select MMF Symphony concerts and opera productions
  • Conduct opera staging rehearsals
  • Conduct chamber ensembles for MMF Chamber concerts


  • Participate in conducting classes with Resident and Guest Faculty
  • Receive Access to all MMF Rehearsals and Classes

* Auditors do not receive orchestral podium time.

Housing Fees

$650 per person/double occupancy

$850 per person/single occupancy

(Miami Residents who choose to reside at home do not have to pay housing fees)

Tuition and Fees

Assistant Conductors- Tuition-$3000

Auditors- Tuition- $1500

Registration Fee- $250

Application Fee- $35


Please submit our online application and provide links to conducting videos from a Youtube or Vimeo link. Videos must face the conductor and should include at least 2 contrasting works and not exceed 15 minutes. Videos should include applicants conducting a full orchestra or chamber ensemble. Applicants may also submit videos with piano, but we prefer an ensemble of at least 6 musicians.  

Scholarships- Partial work study scholarships are available for conducting participants.
